$45 million now available to revitalize U.S. communities hurt by shift from coal power

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) will accept applications for the 2019 round of the Partnership for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization (POWER) Initiative from February 1 through April 10, 2019.

Approximately $45 million will be awarded through this competitive grant process. In FY 2019, ARC’s POWER Initiative will continue focusing on regional investments that maximize economic revitalization in the Appalachian region’s coal-impacted communities.

ARC has awarded $120 million to date through the POWER Initiative in order to help coal-impacted communities in 309 Appalachian counties diversify and grow their economies.

The POWER Initiative is a congressionally funded initiative that targets federal resources to help communities and regions that have been affected by job losses in coal mining, coal power plant operations, and coal-related supply chain industries due to the changing economics of America’s energy production.

POWER supports efforts to create a more vibrant economic future for coal-impacted communities by cultivating economic diversity, enhancing job training and re-employment opportunities, creating jobs in existing or new industries, and attracting new sources of investment.

This RFP is organized to provide a general overview of the POWER Initiative, as well as the specific requirements needed to complete a POWER FY19 grant application.

Completed applications are due no later than April 10, 2019 at 5 p.m. ET.
