7 railway stations in Chennai, India to be renovated and redeveloped

Chennai (India) area railways plan to modernise seven railway stations in the city and the suburbs as part of the ministry’s initiative to redevelop and modernise stations to enhance travel experience and to generate revenue.

Southern Railway has prepared a report for Chennai Central, Egmore, Tambaram, Chengalpet, Jolarpet, Arakkonam and Katpadi in the Chennai division by compiling details like land available for commercial development, map of the stations and approximate cost for the project for attracting investors.

As announced in the railway budget, Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation (IRSDC) will redevelop stations by attracting ideas and design from private parties.

The project is going to be funded by leveraging commercial development of vacant land around the station and by adding more floors to the existing buildings.
