The accredited American Chestnut Land Trust (ACLT) is remaking its “community supported agriculture” farm into an “agriculture supporting community” farm.
Rather than selling CSA shares, the land trust will donate the majority of the farm’s produce to local food pantries.
Farming 4 Hunger (link is external), a nonprofit dedicated to feeding the hungry in southern Maryland with fresh produce, helped inspire the change and provide connections for the effort.
ACLT is very proud of our volunteer run Double Oak Farm, located next to our North Side Trailhead in Prince Frederick, Maryland. More than 4500 pounds of naturally grown, fresh vegetables were donated to local Calvert County food pantries during 2015.
We also enjoyed teaching guests to grow their own healthy food. Our EDGE Garden (Educational Demonstration Garden Experiment) – which demontrates a dozen easy at home natural growing techniques among other earth friendly gardening examples – offered tours to garden clubs, school groups and farmers market visitors.
