A new plan for equitable revitalization in Washington, DC’s Anacostia neighborhood

On October 3, 2018, the 11th Street Bridge Park project (which has been featured several times here in REVITALIZATION over the years) released their updated Equitable Development Plan (EDP).

It should probably be called an Equitable Redevelopment Plan, since it involves repurposing, renewing and reconnecting (the 3Re Strategy) many natural, built and socioeconomic assets that have been previously developed.

This new version includes new cultural equity strategies, as well as updates to the workforce, housing and small business strategies and lessons learned along the way.

The EDP was first developed in December 2015 through a community-led process that focused on identifying strategies to ensure the 11th Street Bridge Park could serve as an anchor for inclusive economic growth. The EDP was always intended to be an organic document that could expand and respond to the needs of the residents we serve.

So, over the past year, Bridge Park’s Deputy Director Irfana Jetha Noorani convened local arts and cultural leaders to provide guiding strategies around how the Bridge Park could be a platform to amplify the stories, culture and heritage of neighboring residents.

The Bridge Park has secured over $56 million to implement the EDP, and continues to work with many local residents and nonprofits to implement these strategies.
