After reviving City Center, Birmingham (UK) shifts to revitalizing neighborhoods

The Birmingham (England) City Council has released a budget proposal that they say will help the city take back its neighborhoods.

The entire City Council joined together Monday for a press conference in support of its proposal, which it says was informed by meetings with communities across Birmingham.

For several years, the city has put money into the City Center development and we have seen the fruits of those investments. Our commitment was always that when we began to generate the necessary revenue for the city, to take it back into the neighborhoods,” Council President Jonathan Austin said.

The council’s budget includes $3.5 million in weed abatement, which the mayor’s budget did not include; as well as $3 million to demolish abandoned homes, where Bell’s budget allotted $1 million.

Our focus moving forward with this budget and future budget is neighborhood revitalization, neighborhood stabilization and neighborhood cleanup,” Austin continued.
