Over the next decade, trillions of dollars of public and private sector funding will fuel new investments in infrastructure, transit, housing, health, and preparing for the challenges of climate change. Just last November, voters across the country approved billions of dollars in local and state public funding to support bold new 21st century infrastructure investments. These investments have the potential to connect people with more opportunities, improve regional economies, and reduce pollution and limit threats from natural hazards, but require us to change the policies and practices that shape our built environment.
The issues of poverty, racial equity, health, and climate impacts are inextricably linked to each other and how we build the places we live, work, and play. These issues must be addressed together and engage community residents from the start in deciding how their neighborhoods are shaped by large-scale investments. This is a critical moment when residents, local community groups, public sector leaders, funders, and investors must come together to ensure that these major new investments are made in ways that build places where everyone thrives.
The Strong, Prosperous, And Resilient Communities Challenge (SPARCC) is supporting locally driven efforts in six regions to ensure that major new infrastructure investments lead to equitable, healthy, and sustainable opportunities for all. Representatives from SPARCC’s initial six regions – Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Memphis, and the San Francisco Bay Area – will join initiative partners and funders in a dialogue about how to build resilient and prosperous cities and regions and how we can create policies, capital systems, and data-driven approaches that enhance opportunities for all.
