City gets $2 million loan to clean landfill and attract $26 million redevelopment

With a developer promising a $26 million investment near the Hazel Park Raceway, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has approved a $2 million loan for the city of Hazel Park to clean up a former landfill.

The funds will go toward “environmental response activities and a vapor mitigation system at the former landfill,” the MDEQ announced Wednesday.

Developer Ashley Capital plans to spend $26 million on a 575,000-square-foot industrial building to be built for manufacturing, warehousing and distribution at the site, according to the MDEQ.

Officials said the development is expected to generate at least 200 jobs and help revitalize one of the main corridors of the city.
