Cultural rejuvenation of an English city in a post-industrial age

The city of Hull in Yorkshire, northern England, was for many years known for its fishing fleet and other industry rather than its culture, but in 2017 it will wear the crown of the UK’s City of Culture.

It is quite a turn around for the city that for many years bore the brunt of many a joke in public discourse in the UK.

Andrew Dixon, a consultant who worked on Hull’s bid for the title is speaking at the Planning Congress in Melbourne next week. He says Hull illustrates what can be achieved if a city is prepared to look for new and exciting ways to form an identity.

But can every town or city reinvigorate itself in this way and can culture hold the key?
