Developers and city ask San Bernardino citizens for downtown revitalization ideas

Carousel Mall and Theater Square are at the center of San Bernardino, California, and the community is being given a chance to say what should become of them as the downtown revitalizes.

City staff and developers spent five hours gathering public input at two open houses on March 28, 2016, briefly discussing what’s been done so far at the city-owned site of the declining mall and busier Regal Theater and touching on possible visions for its future.

The developers have suggested a mixture of office, retail and residential uses for the downtown site, which consists of the 43-acre mall and 5-acre Theater Square.

The intention, which they hoped to validate Monday, is to have more of a “district” approach than a single “project,” said John Fransen, president of The Fransen Company.
