Effort to breed & reintroduce Andean Condors to Colombia is underway

Two condors from the Chilean Andes are now at the Colombian National Aviary on Isla de Baru off the country’s Caribbean coast, representatives of the wildlife park said.

The goal “is to breed and reintroduce the condors,” since it is estimated that only 180 specimens remain in the country, Alba Lucia Gómez, the manager of the aviary’s foundation, told EFE.

Just a little over two months ago, three pairs of condors were brought to Colombia directly from Chile. They were in quarantine at Bogotá’s Jaime Duque Park and one of them is now in the aviary,” Gómez said.

The pair of condors, accustomed to the cold of the South American Andes, will now live at sea level and endure year-round temperatures of around 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

These carrion-eating members of the vulture family “are used to Chilean summers that are pretty freezing cold, but they’re behaving beautifully,” Gómez said.
