Fremont, CA middle school students team with city to restore creek ecology

Alsion Montessori Middle School has been teaming up with the City of Fremont (Calofornia) Environmental Services Division on a monthly basis to help restore Sabercat Creek.

Their efforts began in September of 2013.

The students learn how to improve the health of native trees and shrubs, stabilize soils and creek banks, filter pollutants, and improve food and shelter for wildlife.

They also get hands-on experience applying the ecological restoration concepts they learn in the classroom to real-life scenarios.

Students learn techniques for enhancing the survival of desirable plants and for removing aggressive, invasive exotic plants that would otherwise overwhelm native plants and reduce biodiversity.
