Traditionally, gentrification has been presented in a largely racial context: usually whites displacing African-American or Hispanic residents from an urban neighborhood undergoing revitalization.
But the core issue has little to do with race, and everything to do with income. Is it any less traumatic for a poor family to be ousted from their long-time home by soaring rents or real estate taxes, and have someone of their own race move in?
