Resident-powered urban regeneration: Glasgow pledges 25,000 new homes

Glasgow (Scotland) City Council has committed itself to building 25,000 new homes in the city over the next decade.

To be delivered in partnership with the public and private sectors, the announcement forms part of the council’s People Make Glasgow Home housing strategy.

This strategy will see council-owned land released for the development of affordable homes as well as self and custom-built housing, additional help for first time buyers seeking mortgages and the conversion of empty shops into housing.

The 10-point Housing Acceleration Plan to deliver these 25,000 new homes includes these actions:

  • Accelerating the Transformational Regeneration Areas programme to deliver up to 6500 homes through special purpose regeneration vehicle Transforming Communities: Glasgow.
  • Establishing a Memorandum of Understanding with Scottish Canals to increase regeneration activity – including the building of more homes – around the Canal Corridor as part of the regeneration of North Glasgow.
  • Publishing a Statement on Student Accommodation, in partnership with the city’s education establishments, within a year.
  • An action plan to bring empty homes and underused space above shops and long-term empty retail units into effective residential use.
