Global trend of demolishing penitentiary-style low-income housing hits Glasgow

The first of the eight buildings – which were designed to hold 4,700 people when finished in 1969 – was flattened by 275kg of explosives three years ago.

The demolition is part of the Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) plan to regenerate communities across the city, which will see thousands of new homes built.

When they were built, the Red Road flats were the highest in Europe at 292ft. One of the blocks was demolished in 2013 and another in 2012.

The bottom ten storeys of the blocks remained tonight and will be demolished using machinery at a later stage.

Even after falling into decline, they remained an important part of the city’s skyline and formed the inspiration for the 2006 Bafta-winning film Red Road.
