Historic Thomas Edison factory being repurposed as mixed-use to revitalize area

The former Thomas Edison factory complex in West Orange, New Jersey is on its way to becoming a mixed-use center, anchoring a revitalization effort all around the historic property.

Its developer, Prism Capital Partners, announced that it had started the renovation and reconstruction of the 100-year-old building.

The Bloomfield-based developer is planning to build 333 apartments, 18,400 square feet of retail space and a 630-space parking structure as part of the first phase of what it calls Edison Village.

The retail component is slated to be complete in mid-2017, and the residential portion is scheduled to open in mid-2018.

The $230 million project will give new life to a structure built in 1913 by Thomas Edison, whose employees produced storage batteries used in light delivery vehicles, automobiles, railroad signals, industrial applications and mining equipment. Operations at what was the Thomas Edison Invention Factory and Commerce Center ceased in 1965.
