On May 14, 2016, community leaders kicked off a program aimed at converting vacant and abandoned apartments into homes in the distressed southside Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois.
The Renew Woodlawn Homeownership Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the National Foreclosure Settlement Awards and the city of Chicago.
The program offers incentives, including $15,000 grants for down payments and other assistance, to those who purchase and rehabilitate homes.
The program hopes to create 20 new homeowners in Woodlawn.
