New RFP possible on redevelopment of historic downtown Indianapolis Coke plant

Mayor Joe Hogsett‘s administration has asked Indianapolis Public Schools to postpone action on the former Coca-Cola bottling plant, while the city considers taking over the redevelopment process.

The 285,000-square-foot Coke plant in Indianapolis, Indiana was once the largest Coca-Cola bottling plant in the world.

It is known for its terra cotta facade, which each developer plans to preserve, and impressive interior spaces.

It’s a potentially transformative site, certainly for that part of Downtown, if not all of Downtown,” said Jeff Bennett, the deputy mayor of community development. “We just want to make sure we’re approaching it in the right way.

All of the developers plan to seek help from the city for environmental cleanup. Some are asking for additional subsidies.

Bennett said they want a “…process that also acknowledges you’re in the middle of a neighborhood, you’re in the middle of a historic district and you’re in potentially one of the most catalytic sites Downtown.
