Not just demolitions and vacant house sales: Does Kalamazoo County, Michigan have America’s most revitalizing land bank?

The 2020 book, RECONOMICS: The Path To Resilient Prosperity had a section that described why so many land banks fail to achieve the community revitalization that was at the heart of why they were created in the first place.

Many—maybe most—have simply become repositories for a city’s worst properties. They focus on transactions that get these properties off the books, and often demolish—rather than renovate—structurally-sound houses.

Regular readers of REVITALIZATION know that our articles have featured the activities of the wonderful Kalamazoo County Land Bank several times over the years.

Their slogan is the super-successful 3Re Strategy for revitalization that was documented in RECONOMICS: repurpose, renew, reconnect.

The Kalamazoo County Land Bank has just published their 2020 Annual Report, which we’re sharing with you here.

If you manage a land bank—or if you’re planning of creating one—this report will give you some excellent insights into how to run one properly.
