Portland’s (OR) bridge to the future

Portland, Oregon is a leader in the emerging practice known as “adaptive renewal”. Adaptive renewal combines tactical projects that revitalize their present with strategic projects and programs that revitalize their future.

Most of know how this beautiful city has revitalized their present, such as by repurposing a dead industrial zone into a gorgeous residential and retail area (the Pearl District).

But they are also revitalizing their future by designing new infrastructure to make their city less car-dependent. A perfect example is their new Tillikum Crossing Bridge.

It’s unusual in that it serves pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transit, but now private cars or trucks are allowed.
