Reconstruction of historic ship leads to renovated tourist facility in Bath, Maine

On July 9, 2016, a newly-renovated visitor center opened up in Bath, Maine, right next to the site of the reconstruction of the ship “Virginia.”

Thanks to a grant from the Maine Humanities Council, the visitor center got a facelift, and will now be open to educate people on a replica of the first ship ever built in North America by English colonists.

It’s the very first ship built in the new world,” said Maine’s First Ship Board Member Jeremy Blaiklock. “And it was built right here.

Virginia is a 51-foot pinnace that Maine’s First Ship has worked for years to reconstruct.

The original Virginia was built at Fort St. George at the mouth of the Kennebec River in the early 1600s.

And now, this reconstructed replica will act as floating classroom.
