Regenerating a derelict historic harbor cut off by flood defenses (UK)

Northfleet Harbour is considered by some to be the most exciting opportunity for a Thames Marina and maritime centre on the River Thames (England).

This fully intact harbour could be home to hundreds of yachts and powerboats as well as dozens of historic ships, boat sales, repairs and a whole maritime leisure, sporting, heritage industry.

Situated just 5 mins from Ebbsfleet International Railway Station, this puts Northfleet Harbour 25 minutes from Kings Cross, London and just a couple of hours from mainland Europe and Paris.

MDL Marina Consultancy, a division of MDL Marinas Group Ltd, is pleased to report it has been commissioned to carry out an outline development plan and feasibility study at the historic Northfleet Harbour site.

Northfleet Harbour, a historic harbour on the lower River Thames, was cut off from the river by modern flood defences and has become derelict.

MDL Marina Consultancy has been selected for the project by Ebbsfleet Development Corporation (EDC) and the Northfleet Harbour Restoration Trust (NHRT) to look at the technical and commercial viability of reopening it as a community harbour and marina, providing specialist advice on the marine leisure market, marina design and financial viability.

Alex Beere, Head of Consultancy and Technical Services at MDL Marinas, commented: “We are very pleased to have been selected for this project. It’s an exciting opportunity which will see us explore the viability of re-opening the harbour to develop a marina that will create value for the surrounding community, whilst bringing the heritage of the site to life. We use our specialist marina management experience, development skills and knowledge, to offer advice and assess the viability in order to develop a realistic plan for the future development of Northfleet Harbour.
