Restoration of historic castle in Istanbul turns it into SpongeBob

The restoration process of a historic castle in Istanbul’s Şile district has faced harsh criticism from Turkish social media users.

Many likened the latest state of the castle to cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants.

Some claimed that it looked like something out of video game Minecraft.

The castle’s restoration was started in cooperation with Kocaeli University’s Faculty of Architecture and Design.

On August 27, 2015, Turkish authorities launched an investigation into the restoration.

Adem Avgin, an official in charge of projects at the mayor’s office in the Black Sea coastal town of Sile, told the state-run Anadolu Agency on Thursday that an inspection was being carried out to determine whether restoration of the Byzantine-era tower remained “true” to the original project.
