Reuse of old firehouse boosts beer-powered downtown revitalization

You may have noticed the downtown Memphis, Tennessee eyesore.

An abandoned firehouse next to the FedEx Forum has sat empty for years.

Over a century ago, it was a fire station, but since then it’s been everything from a night club to a recording station.

Come October, the building will see new life.

A temporary beer garden and entertainment venue with food trucks is opening up inside.

It will be called “Station 3: The Memphis Firehaus.”

The same folks who were behind the beer garden at the old Tennessee Brewery last Spring were the brains behind this operation.

Some people credited the beer garden for saving the brewery and convincing an investor to pay $27.5 million to redevelop it into an apartment building; ultimately bringing construction jobs and revenue into Memphis.
