RFP: Architect needed for $22 million library renovation (Massachusetts)

After announcing last week that they are seeking an architect, city and library leaders in Fitchburg, Massachusetts are moving forward with what they hope will be a $22 million library renovation.

Securing an architect is the first step in a process to revamp the Fitchburg Public Library by adding study rooms, a designated teen area, a larger children’s space, and a creative space.

Library Director Sharon Bernard explained the city will apply in January for a grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners to add 60,000 square feet of library space.

Last week, the city publicized a Request for Proposal for architectural services, which include a feasibility study and schematic design.

Bernard explained that Owner’s Project Manager Colliers International calculated the library needs can be met with 60,000 square feet of additional space.

The city will pay an architectural firm up to $50,000 to complete the study and design, which was money awarded in a previous grant from the Board of Library Commissioners.

Proposals due: June 9, 2016.
