Singapore repurposing abandoned railway into a park that spans the entire country

Residents of Singapore will soon be able to easily walk and bike across the entire country—thanks to its new “high line” project.

Taking inspiration from New York City’s High Line, Singapore has announced plans to transform the former Keretapi Tanah Melayu railway into pedestrian-oriented public space.

Given the project’s magnitude, this is no small undertaking. The rail corridor currently spans 24 kilometers, stretching from the country’s northern border to the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station in the south.

The ultimate goal of the project is to turn the disused rail corridor into a linear park—complete with greenery, rest areas and lights—where residents can safely walk, jog and cycle.

Mr. Lawrence Wong, Singapore’s Minster for National Development, noted his aspirations for the project in his announcement speech: “…the Rail Corridor will provide a distinctive community green space for all Singaporeans.
