Hear what Washington, DC is doing as one of the designated “100 Resilient Cities,” to become more climate resilient. Global speaker and author of “The Restoration Economy,” Storm Cunningham, will highlight opportunities for businesses, communities, and investors. One program at the University of the District of Columbia is developing urban agriculture and food hubs in DC as a climate resiliency and economic development strategy.
This event will be conducted on Thursday, October 20th , by Leaders in Energy and Resilient Virginia and take place at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, at 777 North Capitol Street, NE, Washington DC which is near the Union Station Metro on the red line.
Our moderator will be Annette Osso, Managing Director of Resilient Virginia. Welcoming comments will be made by Stephen Walz, Director, Department of Environmental Programs, Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. Our event is being hosted by the Metropolitan Council of Governments (MWCOG). MWCOG is a leading organization in the Washington, DC area which coordinates the regional implementation of clean energy and sustainability projects.
Speaker Storm Cunningham, who will set the stage with the “big picture overview”, states “My mission is to help reverse poverty, biodiversity loss, and climate change by shifting the world’s economy to a resilient growth model based primarily on regenerating our cities, farmlands, and natural resources.”

Dwane Jones, Ph.D., is the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development + Resilience at the University of the District of Columbia, a division of the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES). Dwane conducts research and teaches courses in Urban Sustainability, Environmental Sustainability, Sustainability Entrepreneurship, Public Policy and Health, and Green Infrastructure. He has degrees in Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, and Urban Design.
Harrison Newton is the chief manager responsible for launching the District’s 100 Resilient Cities program and establishing a focus on resilience within the Office of the City Administrator (OCA). He leads a strategic launch team including senior representatives of the Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic Opportunity, the Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, the DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency and the DC Departments of Energy and Environment (DOEE), Health (DOH), Planning (OP) and Housing (DCHA).
