VIDEO: Fastest-growing little city in Alabama is revitalizing its historic downtown, starting with an ugly gravel parking lot

In Calera, Alabama, Main Street Calera intends to bring its historic downtown area back to life.

Calera is in Shelby and Chilton counties, and is the location of the Shelby County Airport.

As of the 2010 census, Calera had a population of 11,620, more than tripling its total in 2000, making it the fastest-growing city in Alabama. It’s within the Birmingham-Hoover Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The downtown was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 29, 2006

Plans include turning an ugly gravel parking lot into a space with a stage, pavilion, greenery and more.
