Tiny town with regional tourism strategy gets downtown revitalization money

An effort to make tiny Dungannon, Virginia (population: 321) a more desirable place to live just got a big boost.

The small town was awarded a $700,000 grant to revitalize the downtown area.

Mayor Debra Horne said she and a management team worked for a year and a half for this Community Development Block Grant.

The grant comes from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.

The plan is to boost the tourism economy, and not just in Dungannon or Scott County.

Horne said all of the surrounding counties are making an effort to work together and to take advantage of the natural beauty to make the area a tourist destination.
