The city of Toledo, Ohio received $50,000 from the U.S. Forest Service Great Lakes Restoration Initiative for two projects to plant urban trees “to increase beauty and green livability” in the central city, Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson announced Friday.
“We are celebrating partnerships that are improving our neighborhoods and making them more safe and livable,” Mayor Hicks-Hudson said.
The mayor said the city would first plant trees along Detroit Avenue where the tree canopy will “visually weave together” homes and empty parcels where houses once stood.”
“This is a model for us on green infrastructure,” Lucas County Commissioner Tina Skeldon Wozniak said. “We want to highlight green infrastructure as a way to control water runoff.”
