VIDEO: Community-based initiative is restoring 375,000 acres of Sumatran wildlife habitat

The Riau Ecosystem Restoration (RER) is a multi-party project to restore and protect 150,000 hectares (375,000 acres) of peatland in Sumatra, Indonesia.

Backed by a 10-year US$100m investment from pulp and paper company APRIL Group, RER is working to restore this vital ecosystem, which has been degraded by years of encroachment and illegal logging.

RER is home to hundreds of species, some of which are considered to be endangered, such as the Sumatran Tiger.

Largely unmapped before the project began, RER is being explored by teams of scientists who continue to make exciting discoveries, while conservation teams replant degraded forests.
