WANTED: Appalachian Reforestation and Native Plant Restoration Project Director

In West Virginia, Appalachian Headwaters seeks a full-time Reforestation and Native Plant Project Director.

Appalachian Headwaters is a nonprofit organization focused on restoration of native ecosystems and sustainable economic development in central Appalachia. This position will help direct Headwaters’ Mined Land Reforestation program and native plant production program. The goal of the programs is to collaborate with leading scientists to re-establish productive native hardwood forests and restore water quality on former surface mines in the region and to help produce many of the plants grown there.

The position will oversee the ecological restoration of a 4,800-acre site in West Virginia, subsequent reclamation projects, and a native plant nursery site in in West Virginia. The successful candidate will work closely with Headwaters staff, foresters and other project partners to manage reforestation work, and plan for the long-term management of nursery and reclamation sites. The position will also be involved in building support for similar future projects and may include grant proposal and report writing.

Qualifications needed:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. A Master’s degree and experience in a related field is preferred;
  • Strong science background with a focus on forest reclamation, forest ecology and native Appalachian plants preferred but not required;
  • Willingness to engage in occasional overnight travel;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to people of diverse backgrounds; and
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple and diverse tasks.
