WANTED: CFO, community development corporation for Lakota Sioux (SD)

The Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation (TVCDC) seeks a Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

The TVCDC mission is to empower Lakota youth and families to improve the health, culture, and environment of our communities, through the healing and strengthening of cultural identity.

As CFO, you will provide financial leadership and accountability. You’ll be responsible for the overall financial management of the TVCDC, and will report directly to the Executive Director, and at times to the Board of Directors.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all accounting, financial reporting, analysis, capital management.
  • Responsible for preparing monthly, quarterly, annual unaudited financial statements.
  • Facilitate performance of and cooperate with independent auditors and financial consultants.
  • Directly mange and develop finance staff.
  • Oversee Payroll processing for employees.
  • Grant allocation best practices.
  • Lead annual audit preparation activities.
  • Cooperate and collaborate with independent auditor on A133 Federal Audits.
  • Work directly with the Executive Director to prepare budgets for grants and projects.
  • Assist Program Managers/Directors in preparation of monthly and annual financial reporting materials and metrics for TVCDC Initiatives.
  • Implementation/oversight of internal financial/fiscal controls and overall financial policies of TVCDC.
  • Overall financial management of the Organization.
  • Financial grant management and grant requirement reporting.
  • Responsible for day-to-day financial projection and financial management of the entire organization, including cash flow planning, availability, investment, and asset management.
  • Accounts receivable and accounts payable management.
  • Track incoming grants, donations and in-kind donations.
  • Develop and utilize forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses to provide insight into the Organization’s operations and business plans for multi-year budgeting and long-term planning.
  • Represent the company to financial partners, including financial institutions, investors, foundation executives, auditors, public officials, etc.
  • Remain up-to-date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
  • Coordinate audits and proper tax return filing.
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.

  • Demonstrate leadership throughout all levels of organization.
  • Demonstrate a history of success in both non-profit and for profit business.
  • Strong skills in working with Native American people and tribes.
  • Adaptable to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace while directly managing and developing finance staff.

Experience Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting or related field.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in State of South Dakota or another jurisdiction.
  • Five to seven years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $5,000,000.
  • Thorough knowledge of “allocation” with prior exposure to complex accounting transactions.
  • Extensive knowledge of Quickbooks, with preference for additional accounting systems understanding and proficiency.
  • History of cooperating with other CPAs, teams, and co-workers.
  • Extensive knowledge with Microsoft office including Power Point, Excel spreadsheets, Word and MS Project.
  • Five to ten years of experience in non-profit bookkeeping and accounting.
  • Five to ten years of experience working with Indigenous communities.
  • In a position to give a long term commitment to TVCDC (3 to 5 years or more).
  • Extensive knowledge in Excel, has to have the ability to create, manage, and populate multiple spread sheets for grants, budgeting, projections, and debt management.

Salary: $55,000.00-$70,000.00 based on experience

Benefits: Full healthcare insurance premium paid by TVCDC, up to four weeks paid time off, and up to 3% match on retirement plan.
