The Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership seeks a Director of the Center for Water Resources in its Washington, DC office.
The Director of the Center for Water Resources develops, coordinates, and implements advocacy campaigns to achieve the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership’s water policy goals through interaction with U.S. federal agencies, Congress, NGO partners, and other organizations as appropriate.
The Director develops, coordinates, and implements strategic advocacy campaigns to change federal policy and funding to improve aquatic habitat for fish and wildlife populations important to hunters and anglers. S/he identifies conservation policy and funding opportunities, evaluates the potential for TRCP involvement, works with TRCP partner organizations to engage and educate the broader hunter/angler conservation community, and develops and implements strategies to influence policy and funding for fish and wildlife conservation at the national level.
The Director reports to the Chief Conservation Officer and liaisons with other TRCP policy initiatives, communications staff, and government relations staff to implement campaigns that utilize grassroots sportsmen’s advocacy, government relations, and traditional and new media. S/he is responsible for cultivating a broad set of relationships with Congressional members and staff of both parties and both chambers as well as relevant federal agencies. S/he is responsible for advocating for TRCP’s water policy agenda on Capitol Hill and within the administration. The Director provides expert policy analysis, writes grant proposals and reports, and supports donor cultivation as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Promote public funding for the protection, sustainable management, and restoration of fish and wildlife habitat by tracking and influencing agency budget requests and congressional appropriations.
- Convene regular meetings with TRCP partner organizations to identify critical water policy issues, set goals, and develop strategies to improve federal water policy and aquatic, wetland and riparian habitats.
- Identify and cultivate new partnerships that could advance the Center’s goals.
- Cultivate a broad set of relationships with Congressional members and staff of both parties and both chambers, and advocate for the TRCP’s water policy agenda on Capitol Hill.
- Cultivate a broad set of relationships with relevant staff at federal agencies with water management responsibilities, including the Department of the Interior (primarily the Bureau of Reclamation, Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. Geological Survey), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Environmental Protection Agency, the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and the Office of Management and Budget.
- Develop and advance a policy and funding agenda for the TRCP to promote hunting and fishing through legislative and administrative action.
- Track legislative and rulemaking activities that may impact fish and wildlife habitat, and coordinate the TRCP’s response in coordination with partners.
- Coordinate with other TRCP Center Directors, especially the Director of the Center for Agricultural Lands.
Salary range: $75,000 – $85,000
