WANTED: Executive Director for downtown riverfront revitalization non-profit (MA)

Hoosic River Revival (HRR) seeks an Executive Director for their North Adams, Massachusetts headquarters.

Hoosic River Revival (HRR) is a community-based nonprofit on the forefront of the movement to restore rivers channelized for flood protection in the 1950s.

We’re working to reclaim the Hoosic River as the gem of downtown North Adams with a 21st-century design including wetlands, parklands, and paths that reconnect residents and tourists to a clean, beautiful, safe river.

Our goal is to re-establish the Hoosic River as the heart of North Adams’ economy and community. The two branches to the Hoosic River converge in North Adams and flow West to the Hudson River. The Hoosic River has historically been the engine behind North Adams’ economy. Flood protection, while effective, has separated the city’s residents from one of their greatest assets.

When the ecological, recreational, cultural, and economic benefits of the river are realized, the city will be transformed. Imagine a revitalized Hoosic River, reinvented as a river filled with life, both in the channel and along its banks,

The preliminary design for the pilot project includes improved habitat for river species, reimagined recreational facilities, wellplanned paths, and a host of amenities for residents and visitors. These improvements will transform the area while still maintaining the existing level of flood protection.

The total cost for the river restoration project is estimated at $200 million. The first phase is expected to cost $20 million. HRR has secured an $8.75 million line item in the Massachusetts bond bill for the first phase. One of the ED’s key responsibilities will be to ensure those monies are authorized for the project, and secure additional state, federal, and private funding.

This is a rare and special opportunity to help restore a major environmental and economic asset in a beautiful location. Though it’s the state’s smallest city, North Adams has a mix of culture, community, nature, and recreational opportunities that offer a rich yet relaxed quality of life. Cultural attractions include MASS MoCA, The Clark, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, Tanglewood, and more.

Both Williams College and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts host many public performances, lectures by well-known speakers, and other events. North Adams is a perfect place for people who love the outdoors and was recently recognized as an Appalachian Trail Community. The ED will need to live in or near North Adams in order to interact regularly with people in the area. The ED may work from home or in an HRR office or co-working space.

Full-time salary range is $50 – 70K annually, commensurate with experience. Competitive benefits package included.

Applications preferred by January 27, 2017, but the position will remain open until filled.
