WANTED: Historic Preservation Planning Consultant (Detroit, Michigan)

The City of Detroit‘s Parks and Recreation Department seeks a Historic Preservation Planning Consultant to focus on performing work in planning and preserving the historic and cultural resources at the Historic Fort Wayne complex.

The planning consultant will assume the role of project director for the planning grant, collaborating with the National Park Service (NPS) and National Park Foundation (NPF) to execute the project as outlined in the grant agreement.

The goal is to improve the equity of recreational and cultural opportunities for the residents of the City by revitalizing the City’s most historic asset.

Duties:

  • The development of a strategic plan for Historic Fort Wayne in Detroit, Michigan;
  • Establishing a leasing program for the City of Detroit, including the preparation of an RFP/ Request for Expression of Interest for renovation and use of buildings in the fort complex by the Spring of 2018;
  • The development of a national model for how the National Park Service can lend technical expertise and experience to advance recreational and cultural opportunities in urban areas and its urban agenda for its second century;
  • Provide monthly narrative report summarizing the progress of the project to Detroit Parks and Recreation to ensure compliance with established deadlines and grant requirements;
  • Conducting cross-country Historic Site surveys and research for historic context development;
  • Solicit community input through focus groups and public forums;
  • Seek real estate appraisals to value existing military buildings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Urban Planning or other related field of study;
  • Four or more years’ experience working on historic preservation issues in an urban environment;
  • Familiarity with National Park Service preferred;
  • Experience with grant administration preferred;
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation;
  • Ability to travel throughout the United States.
