The Pew Charitable Trusts is hiring an Officer, Restore America’s Parks, for its Washington, DC office.
The Officer, Restore America’s Parks, provides national park policy expertise and campaign assistance with the goal of providing a long-term funding solution to national park maintenance needs, provides legislative expertise, helps identify viable political champions, assists in the development and implementation of campaign, field, and legislative strategies, and coordinates closely with national and state partners. The Officer works closely with campaign director, communications staff, government relations, and field operations.
This position, based in Pew’s Washington, DC office, will report to the Director, Restore America’s Parks. It is expected that this position is for a term period through December 31, 2018, with the possibility of an extension pending the success of the program, funding sources and board decisions on continued support.
Responsibilities:
- Provide policy and legislative expertise in the development and implementation of campaign strategies.
- Analyze legislation and administrative policy for its potential impact on national park maintenance backlog issues.
- Regularly communicate with Members of Congress, members of their staff, and Administration officials regarding necessary National Park Service maintenance backlog reforms.
- Draft legislation and/or amendments; work with champions, key congressional offices, and national partners to negotiate language and navigate legislation through Congress; prepare statements and congressional testimony as needed.
- Work with director to cultivate and engage coalition of support. Working with partners, initiate fly-ins with diverse allies, as needed.
In coordination with communications staff and director, speak to media on specific campaign issues. - Conduct special projects as determined in conjunction with the director.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred.
- At least eight years of experience in federal legislative arena or policymaking process, with focus on appropriations preferred. Management experience preferred.
- Working knowledge and experience with national park or conservation issues.
- Demonstrated strong analytical skills. Ability to synthesize information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue/problem, determine whether it is ripe for intervention and identify the means to address it.
- A strong commitment to producing measurable results.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills, including demonstrated ability to summarize issues and speak persuasively. Ability to facilitate.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and manage productive relationships with staff, consultants, partners, and others.
- Ability to work productively and diplomatically with a wide array of different people and institutions.
- Seasoned judgment; able to make decisions and justify recommendations based on the best available information; ability to be responsive, clear and firm with colleagues and partners.
