Southern New England has recently seen significant developments in urban agriculture.
These include the implementation of Boston’s urban agriculture ordinance in December 2013; the creation of Hartford’s urban ag ordinance in April 2015; and Providence’s robust urban ag initiative, “Lots of Hope.”
Urban agriculture is being used to create and enhance a sense of community, to support and celebrate diversity by allowing immigrant populations to grow culturally appropriate foods for consumption or sale, and to increase food security.
It is also an avenue for potential economic growth in the region.
