Efforts are underway to restore a New Jersey pipe organ described as the largest musical instrument on the planet.
The massive organ at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City hasn’t fully functioned since a hurricane in 1944. Overall, it weighs about 150 tons and boasts more than 33,000 pipes.
During the organ’s heyday, historians say its power and tonal range were unequaled. But it’s currently operating at about a quarter of its capacity.
Supporters say they’ve raised about $2 million of their $16 million goal.
